What the fight is actually about
Elon & Sam in Court ⚔️
In 2015, Elon Musk and Sam Altman co-founded OpenAI as a nonprofit — explicitly to keep powerful AI away from any single company's control, including their own. Elon contributed ~$50M and helped set the mission: AI for the benefit of all humanity, not shareholders.
Then OpenAI got really, really valuable. ChatGPT launched. Valuation hit $300B. And Sam began a process to convert OpenAI from a nonprofit into a for-profit Public Benefit Corporation — which would let investors cash out, and shift control away from the original charitable mission.
Elon sued. His argument: the charitable assets that he and others donated are being quietly converted into private wealth — and that was never the deal. Sam's response: Elon left the board, started his own AI company (xAI), and now just wants to slow down the competition.
🦅 Elon says:
"This could end humanity."
"We donated to a charity, not a startup."
"The mission was hijacked."
"Altman lacks candor." (The board agreed — briefly.)
🤖 Sam says:
"It's sad he's doing this."
"He left the board. He has no standing."
"We need capital to compete globally."
"The nonprofit still has a 30% stake."
What YOU can do that Elon can't 🔥
Elon has billions of dollars and still might lose because he doesn't have legal standing. You don't need standing to do what actually works.
Research publicly available documents
IRS 990 filings, court documents, AG press releases — all public. Search above. Find things.
File a tip
You don't need standing to submit information. Public tips build the record that pressures regulators to act. Use the "File a Tip" tab.
Share specific findings
Every search on this tool generates a shareable link. Post it. Tag journalists. Send it to the California AG's office. Be specific.
Know who actually has power
The California AG and Delaware AG are the real players. They have subpoena power, enforcement authority, and political accountability. Elon doesn't control them. You can pressure them.
Watch the IRS 990s
OpenAI files public tax returns. When the conversion goes through, compare the asset valuations. A $1B nonprofit converting into a $300B for-profit is a number worth examining.
